What To Expect From Counseling
Your first counseling appointment will involve a discussion between you and your counselor about the concerns that prompted you to seek counseling. This will include questions about your past and current life experiences, the coping strategies and self-care skills you have, and your goals for counseling, along with relevant questions about your situation
Rest assured that your counseling session is confidential, and your therapist will explain this at the beginning of your first session. At the end of the session, you and your counselor will discuss potential 'next steps'. Your counselor will work collaboratively with you and will listen respectfully to your unique concerns.
If you feel that your counselor is not the right fit for you, you can request a change of counselors by discussing it directly with your counselor or by speaking with the Counseling Services Front Desk at 406-243-4712.
Counseling services support students by addressing their counseling and psychotherapy needs, helping them maximize their university experience. Our counseling model focuses on short-tern support, where students receive clinical services to tackle immediate concerns and work towards specific goals. If a student's mental health care needs exceed the scope of our services, we will help them find referrals to community-based providers for specialized or long-term care.
