For Faculty
Service Learning is a method of teaching and learning in which students, faculty, and community partners work together to enhance student learning by applying academic knowledge in a community-based setting. Student work addresses the needs of the community as identified through collaboration with community or tribal partners while meeting instructional objectives through faculty-structured service work and critical reflection meant to prepare students to be civically responsible members of the community. At its best, service learning enhances and deepens students' understanding of an academic discipline by facilitating the integration of theory and practice, while providing them with experience that develops life skills and engages them in critical reflection about individual, institutional, and social ethics.
Faculty development funding may be available to faculty who offer service-learning courses in partnership with the Missoula Flagship after-school program. Contact andrea.vernon@mso.umt.edu for more information.
Engaged Faculty Institute Curriculum
is a resource for faculty development specific to service-learning course design (or re-design). This curriculum provides a thorough, updated roadmap for intensive, facilitated faculty development specific to service-learning course construction, implementation, and sustainability in a college or university setting. Each unit within the curriculum addresses a key component of service learning, from basic definitions and an explanation of the pedagogy to thinking about risk management in the design of service-learning courses, to deepening practitioners’ understanding of inclusive prosperity as it relates to the student experience in a service learning course and pursuing opportunities for service learning scholarship. To supplement the content, the curriculum also includes case studies, worksheets, research findings, and syllabi submitted through 46 colleges and universities from 61 academic disciplines and/or Centers for Service Learning and Community Engagement from across the Campus Compact and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health networks.
