Faculty Award for Mentoring Student Research and Creative Activity
The Faculty Award for Mentoring Student Research and Creative Activity honors the considerable dedication of UM faculty members who consistently go above and beyond to serve as mentors to students involved in research or creative activities. The award celebrates faculty members who nurture students’ academic, professional, and personal experiences and is intended to convey UM’s high regard for the outstanding contributions of these faculty members to the campus community.
Award Details
Each year, the Office of Undergraduate Research will give two awards: one recognizing mentorship of undergraduate students and one recognizing mentorship of graduate students.
The winner of each award will receive a cash prize of $500, provided by the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship, and a letter of recognition. Awardees will be recognized during a Week of Excellence ceremony on April 30, 2025.
To be eligible for this award, nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Nominee is a current faculty member at the 猎奇重口 (all campuses included).
- Undergraduate Mentor Award: Nominee must have provided significant, sustained mentorship to undergraduate students in research and/or creative activities at UM for at least two years. (This eligibility includes faculty members who will be completing their second year at UM this spring.)
- Graduate Mentor Award: Nominee must have successfully mentored graduate students at the doctoral and/or master’s level at UM for at least two years. (This eligibility includes faculty members who are completing their second year at UM this spring.)
Previous winners are not eligible for five years from the date of last award.
Nomination Process
Faculty members may be nominated by (1) current student mentees, (2) faculty colleagues, (3) staff members, or (4) program coordinators, department chairs, associate deans, and/or college deans, via a short nomination statement. Individuals may not self-nominate.
Nominees will be notified and asked to provide additional information to the awards committee. This information will include the following:
- A curriculum vitae highlighting undergraduate or graduate research mentoring activities, including a list of presentations and publications that involved students. (The group of students highlighted will depend on the award for which the faculty member is nominated.) Clearly designate the students involved and any student honors, awards, presentations, performances, or scholarships associated with the experience.
- A list of mentees, including: student name, dates or timeframes of mentorship, project title, and current position (if known).
- Names and contact information for two current or recent student mentees.
- Name and contact information for the nominee’s academic administrator (program coordinator, department chair, academic dean).
The awards committee (guided by the Office of Undergraduate Research) will reach out to collect letters of support from:
- The academic administrator with an emphasis on the nominee’s contributions to the department, college, or field via mentoring.
- Two current or recent student mentees.
Selection Process and Timeline
Nomination materials will be reviewed by the Mentorship Awards Committee, consisting of a blend of staff and faculty members. Awardees will be asked to serve on the committee in the year following their recognition.
Given the great diversity in projects, students, and disciplines on campus, there is not a single rubric used to assess nominees and their materials. In general, the Mentorship Awards Committee will look for nominees that demonstrate:
- Consistent, sustained involvement in mentoring
- Documented results of mentorship (e.g., student research and creative activity experiences, student and colleague testimonials, student placement in future programs or careers)
- Expanding/deepening student participation in research and/or creative activity
- Supporting student professional, academic, and personal experiences through building relationships, connections, and communities
- Guiding students through professional experiences and developing needed skills
