General Considerations for All Students
Studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity for all students. It offers the chance to explore a new country, experience a different culture, meet new people, and grow as an individual. We recognize that students may face varying challenges when studying abroad, and we strive to prepare all students so they can have the most rewarding experience possible.
Cultural Awareness and Considerations
Laws, cultural norms, and safety considerations vary widely between countries and regions. Before choosing a study abroad program, all students should consider how well each potential program aligns with their academic and professional goals, as well as their personal circumstances and needs.
Important Questions for All Students to Consider
- What are the laws and legal protections for various personal freedoms in your host country?
- What are the general cultural attitudes and social norms in your host country?
- What support resources are available at your host university? In your host city/country?
- What are the cultural norms for social interaction, friendship, and dating?
- What housing options are available through your program (single rooms, shared spaces, host families), and have you carefully considered all of them?
- If you are going to a non-English speaking country, how might language differences affect your experience?
- What health and safety resources are accessible to all students?
- How does your host institution accommodate various student needs and requests?
- What cultural topics are commonly discussed or considered sensitive in your host country?
**Note: For specific concerns about laws, safety, or accommodations in your chosen country, please schedule a confidential meeting with our study abroad advisors who can provide detailed guidance based on your individual circumstances.
