If you had asked me to draw what an inventor looked like when I was a child, I certainly would not have drawn me! I grew up in Dominica, and as a kid, I never met an inventor and I was never taught about inventors who looked like me. When I was five, I fell in love with science after performing my first experiment with my mom. It was messy and incredibly fun – observing if sand, salt or pepper sauce would dissolve in water. These small beginnings, fueled my curiosity and set me on a path to become a biomedical engineer and patent my ideas.
Today, I work at Intel, helping design medical imaging equipment. I am also the author of a children’s book series, Abby Invents, which challenges young girls to explore science and shows them that girls can be among the greatest of inventors, too.
I don’t compare myself to the experts, but instead compare who I am today with who I was yesterday. If I learned something new today, that’s a win. I choose progress over perfection and growth and grit over giving up.
