Leela Gandhi is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Chicago. In her teaching and research, she focuses on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century drama, the culture of late-Victorian radicalism, Indo-Anglian literature, and Postcolonial theory. She is the author of many publications, including Postcolonial Theory: A Critical Introduction (1998), England Through Colonial Eyes in Twentieth-Century Fiction (2001), and Affective Communities: Anticolonial Thought, Fin de Siecle Radicalism, and the Politics of Friendship (2006). Her latest book, The Common Cause: Postcolonial Ethics and the Practice of Democracy, 1900- 1955, is forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press.
