Projects
1. Editor-in-Chief, In development with Springer Major Reference Works; 2025-2030
The goal of the 2nd edition of The Handbook of the Mathematics of the Arts and Sciences is to continue in the spirit of the first edition, and develop additional chapters and sections that focus on Architecture, Aesthetics, Biological, Ecological and Dynamical Systems, Information Theory, Mathematical Geography, Geometry, and Social Activism, to continue being the authoritative source for the interaction of mathematics, art and science in all aspects of human culture. In the second edition, the newer sections focus on practices in universities, laboratories and professions where this interaction is highly visible. Ultimately the aim is to understand ongoing effort to build bridges between disciplines
2. Editor-in-Chief, (in development with Springer Major Reference Works); 2022-2027
This examines the interaction of visual, computational and experimental approaches in modern mathematics through its interaction with data. Experimental mathematics made the first bold foray into using computational techniques to solve theoretical problems via data saturation and visualizations. Since computing power and powerful algorithms have changed the landscape of visualizing and doing mathematics, different sections of the book provide an access to data driven scenarios in contemporary society. These include data driven modeling in mathematical epidemiology; visualization of information patterns; climate science and ecology. Other sections include chapters which provide visualizations of abstract (theoretical) mathematics; and the application of mathematics in areas such as sports analytics. In this Handbook, the interaction of visualization, computation and experimental mathematics is covered with forays into problems at the intersection of biology, sports, epidemiology, physics, information theory and mathematics both pure and applied. The book is of interest to graduate students of mathematics, computer science, information theory and the sciences as well as university professors of these topics.
3. Editor-in-Chief, 2018-2024
The purpose of this unique Handbook is to unfold the transformation of the philosophy of mathematics from its origins in the history of mathematical practice. In order to do so, chapters describe different mathematical practices in different time periods of history and contrast it with the development of philosophy. The contributions include scholars from other disciplines who have contributed to the richness of perspectives that abound the study of philosophy today. The 114 chapters in 14 sections of this Handbook synthesize what is known, and what has unfolded but also offer directions in which the study of philosophy of mathematics as evident in increasingly diverse mathematical practices is headed. Different sections of the Handbook also offer insights into the origins, debates, methodologies and newer perspectives that characterize the discipline today. This Handbook is curated by an and consisting of leading scholars from the disciplines of mathematics, history and philosophy. The Handbook is dedicated to Reuben Hersh, Yuri Manin and Chandler Davis. The book was appraised by Barry Mazur (Harvard); John Stillwell (U-San Francisco), and Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (IHES-France) as :
4. Editor-in-Chief, 2017-2021
This state-of-the-art handbook consists of 7 parts and more than 100 chapters covering the fascinating interplay of mathematics, arts and sciences. The handbook covers Mathematics and Architecture; Mathematics, Science and Dynamical Systems; Mathematics, Art & Aesthetics; Mathematics, Humanites and Language Arts; Mathematics in Society; Mathematics, History and Philosophy; and New Directions. Science and Art are used as umbrella terms to encompass the physical, natural and geological sciences, as well as the visual and performing arts.
