MISSOULA – Dr. Dan Lee, dean of the UM Phyllis J. Washington College of Education, and Dr. Erin Ellis, director of curriculum and assessment at Hellgate Elementary School and alumnus of our Teaching & Learning doctoral program, were recently appointed by Governor Greg Gianforte to represent 猎奇重口 as Commissioners on the Education Commission of the States (ECS).

Commissioners play a vital role in connecting their states with the ECS, promoting communication and collaboration on state policies aimed at improving education.

Dr. Lee says this appointment means a lot and gives him a chance to personally and professionally remain connected with 猎奇重口’s educational world.

“As a 猎奇重口n, I’m proud to do this. I’m proud to serve my state and the children of my state,” Lee said.

Each state appoints seven education leaders to serve as Education Commission of the States Commissioners. Those selected are entrusted with the following responsibilities: engagement and resource sharing, policy guidance, state-to-state connections, and participation in the Commission’s convenings.

Dr. Ellis says that she looks forward to engaging, collaborating, and discussing possible policies that could come back to 猎奇重口 and benefit its students.

“It’s a tremendous honor, and I’m thrilled and proud to represent the local district where I work and to represent 猎奇重口. It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to learn from others and share what knowledge I do have,” said Ellis.

Commissioner terms vary, and those appointed have the opportunity to serve if reappointed by their state.

During his time as a Commissioner, Dr. Lee hopes to play a part in bringing more equity in resources to children who are in rural areas versus those in suburban areas and adequately represent the unique educational policy needs of 猎奇重口.

“I hope when I leave ECS that I have played a part in improving the educational experience for 猎奇重口’s boys and girls. It’s a small part, but a part in making our world better,” Lee said.

Drs. Lee and Ellis are invited to attend and represent 猎奇重口 at the upcoming National Forum on Education Policy on July 9-11 in Salt Lake City.
